What about boiling synthetics, or, the latest chapter of my string neuroses

My Evah G just died, after about 4 months. Is it safe or even worthwhile to boil perlon or whatever Evahs are made of?

According to some recent reports, it will sound just like new- for about 12 minutes.

Ouch. That's no Spirocore.

I wouldn't try it with Evahs.

I was really happy. Then one day the magic was gone. But if I can change the G once every 4 months, and leave the other 3 (spiros) on indefinately, I can live with that.

I have the same issue with the Dominant G that I use (with 3 Spiros). It lasts about 3-4 months and suddenly dies. It sounds so good with the Spiros though that it will be worth it to just keep a supply of Dom Gs around and swap them out when they go.

T-Bal:

Try a Bel Canto G. If you like the EP sound I am sure you will like the Bel Canto. I love mine for pizz with either the Spiro Weichs or Pyramid Soloflex. I used a Eudoxa G until I tried the Bel Canto. No more instability or buzzing. Just a nice full, gut-like sound.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may have to try that. How does the Bel Canto G compare to a Flexocore 92(bowed and pizz)?

Being another Thomastic string I would think the Bel Canto G would have a life span closer to Spiros. I'm currently using one next to Weichs on my Eminence bass. The same goes for my fav on DB next to Mittels, a Superflex G, which is a nice sounding and less expensive choice.

Besides boiling I'm also wondering if it's safe to use alcohol wipes to clean a Evah Pirazzis w/ their synthetic core & all?
Anyone try that?

I like that Belcanto G too. It's got a short note compared to a Spirocore. It's got a bit more flex than the Flexocor and a bit more sustain. Some basses/bows can make the Belcanto roll a bit where the Flexocor won't but that doesn't happen on my bass. The sound of the BC G string is the closest all steel string to a gut string. It's not quite as pingy or as fast as a Gut string but it speaks well all the way up. It tends to be just a tad slow to respond pizz. Some cats prefer the arco on the EP to the Belcanto, some the other way around. I'm not good enough with the stick to have an opinion.

Good question. I had been wiping off the rosin from the Evah with a paper towel dabbed in alcohol. Hmmm.

T-Bal: I can only compare it to an Original Flatchrome. The Bel Canto has a more full sound for pizz.

Hmmm. I would put the Bel Canto G a world apart from the Superflexible in sound. I found the Superflexible G is very thin and ringy sounding compared to the Bel Canto G. Different basses perhaps. I have an Eberle ply.
Funny thing...the Bel Canto was sent to me by Francois (Monsieur Strings) because he did not like it on his EUB. I tried it out out of curiosity and kept it on. Wonderful sound.

Do you experience this "slowness" compared to the Spiros?

The SF G is the same diameter as a Spiro Mittel. IMHO that's one reason why it matches them so well. Once it breaks in it's not thin and ringy on my Prescott, it's just the thing for its dark sound. Has a great plaintive quality and bows really well. The BelCanto was nice on the Prescott, but a bit too 'wooly'. I put on my EUB where G's tend to be whiny and it's much warmer than most and matches the Weichs well enough as I recall. I haven't been playing that bass too much lately.

Different basses, different needs.

T-Bal: Can't say I have. I did not notice any difference in response when I went from the Eudoxa to the BC. Maybe there would be if I had gone straight from a Weich or Superflexible to the BC. But I will gladly trade the difference in the sound of the BC for the "quickness" (there is any) of the thin and pingy sounding Weich G or Superflex G.

I've been using isopropyl alcohol to get the resin off my EP's, to no ill effect that I've noticed. I can't imagine anything in there that would be alcohol-soluble...

After about three or four months, mostly pizz, my EP's are starting to sound a little thuddy to me. They still give me a little jolt now and then when they step up and sing when I'm not really expecting it, but even so...

Still love 'em arco, they make me sound much better than I really am.

Dear T-bal,

If your EP string is indeed shot, then what's the risk in trying to boil it? You have nothing to lose, right?
