I'm still catching up on the latest and greatest in strings. I see all sorts of threads on different strings, but would like to know what has worked for you and what kind of bass(es) you have. I see BIGGUS and DURRL may have gone the Evah Pizz Weich route.
Arnold started me on Spiro's for the new carved Cleve, tho I want a little more power on the E. Stark E OTW from All Hail Bob.
Youse?

Going to go pick up a fresh set of Spiros tomorrow morning, my bank account's pretty unhappy about it though |

Evah Weichs on the Juzek.
Spiro Mittel E and A, Obligato D and Evah Solo G on the old Bohemian.
10/28 Now Mittels straight across, first time in I don't know how long, working pretty well but the G is a little buzzy...raga style.

i love the setup. killer pizz tone, as well as killer arco on the G and D (the spiros arent terrible for arco.......but they're also not the best

On the '74 Juzek: all Gamut guts: Medium Pistoy G, Light Pistoy D, Medium silver wrapped A and E
On the '28 Juzek: Gamut Medium Lyon G, Gamut Light Lyon D, Garbo regular A and E.
It's constantly changing though.

-Toad, how's the Stark D blending w/ the other Mitts? | The Mittle E is usually easier to get going with the stick than the Stark E. However on the AQ that doesn't seem to be the case. The Stark E has been the best E string for that bass. It's extra tension makes the A, D, and G, strings sound better and the Stark E rattles that box in a way nothing else does below G#...especially under the bow. Plus it's about equal to drive with the bow as the Mitt E on that bass.
I went back to the straight Mitt set on the Cleveland just before I started pressing it back into action while the AQ has been under the knife for the last 4 months. It doesn't seem to care either way and the Mitt E and full mitt set is easier to bow without the Stark E. |

On the Lang: Spiro Mittels all across. Just started with these and couldn't be happier.. arco-wise they sound nice and sweet fresh from the package.
Toad, do you have any experience with Helicor Orchestra Heavy Gage E? Just wondering if you might be able to compare that w/ the Spiro Stark E. |

Usually Weichs, sometimes a Mittel E; I've tried Corellis, Helicores and Pirastro strings but always seem to keep coming back to Spiros. Now since I've pulled back from the Gut String precipice, I'll be trying Animas maybe with a Spiro E. we'll see.

Still five Thomastik Orchestras on the Bohmann.

After a lot of reading hee on TB I changed from Thomastik Belcanto which where to dark and boomy for my bass to Thomastik Dominant. These are extremely rich in producing harmonics. My tuner picked up the tones much more precise and the possibility's in intonation are endless. I'm a happy player now!
And the singers share my feelings because now they can relate better to the bass parts.
