Had these odd strings on them - pretty sure they were arco or hybrid style. The silk wrapping alternated black and blue from string to string - E was black, A was blue, D was black, G was blue. Things went well until he snapped the D string tuning it (don't ask). Now he's looking for a replacement, but no one - including the company who built the bass and the company who sold it to him - will tell him what brand it is. And I've seen these strings on at least 3 other basses in the last two weeks! Does anyone have a clue what these might be? And why is it such a secret?

Sounds like they might have come from the "mystic east" in which case they have no name, and he should look to replace them with "those darned expensive strings" that most of us play.

ps...are these double bass strings???

And he just spent all this money on a bass, and really didn't want to have to buy a whole new set right off the bat. Does ANYONE know what these might be? Has anyone seen them? They sound pretty good, but that's probably because they're new. SOMEONE is making these - I'm seeing them all over the place! |

I've seen very cheap DB strings on eBay, adnd I suspect those are the same Chinese strings that came on his bass. (Personally I think he should bite the bullet and buy some Superflexibles, or look for a deal in slightly used strings here on TB.)
Of course, if he thinks strings are that expensive, (1) we know he bought a Crematino and (2) strings may be the least of his worries.... |

bought it demanding a replacement?!
If they cant/wont tell him what the strings are then that speaks
VOLUMES about what he just bought, and what kind of seller.
I would demand a set of reputable strings or return the whole
bass and go find a seller that isnt a major SLEEZE.

I'm wondering if these might and evaluation set of strings that aren't on the market yet. Recdntly, one of the reps/TBers who had a chance to try some to date unreleased strings wouldn't -to his credit- offer opinions on the product until the company officially released them. Is it possible that people working in the shops are putting evaluation sets of strings on instruments and selling them? Thinking the product will be released in a matter of days and then being put in the uncomfortable position of having to spill the beans? |

No, Upton is innocent I'm sure. Yes I meant the really far east, home of the CCB and the strings to match.
