Why are DB strings so expensive?

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm from the "other side". I've got a morbid curiosity about the dog house, and I'm wondering why DB strings are so expensive. It seems inconceivable to me that four strings can cost $200 and more. Is it economy of scale? Is it a labor intesive process? Can they only be made from unicorn mane? What gives?

I did a search, and came up with nothing. Help me out.

Partly because your favorite double bassist will brag that he goes on 7 year stretches before string changes while your favorite guitarist will brag that he changes his strings daily to maintain the sheen in his tone.

Of course, other forces are at play...maybe some we don't really want to know about.

Mine are made of wound human intestines, then coated with a nickel wrap to help minimize the smell. I think they're so expensive because you have to buy the intestines on the black market, and those guys really gouge on the prices.

And Chris buys the cheap version. I sprung for the vegetarian human-gut strings wound in 24-karat gold. Pricey, but its the sound I hear in my head.

I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals. It's because I hate plants.

Cheap strings

Some players on rockabillybass.com use weed eater cord. Hell, for $30 you can buy 4 different gauges and have strings for the rest of your life - even for me that a good 30 or 40 years.

Should be on Jokes:

Where I come from the definition of a vegetarian is someone with poor aim.

I was gouged the other day and then some of my intestine was removed. i woke up in a bathtub of ice with a note pinned to my shirt detailing what had happened to me. Thank God they didn't take a kidney.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Oh, the Humanity ! Shouldn't we consider the "silent scream of the vegetable ?"

I think I'll start farming caterpillars and instead of letting them build a cacoon from silk I will train them to make strings. "No caterpillars were harmed in the production of these strings ."
