If it's a fake, the person sure knew what they were doing and only got a few hundred for it. First thing I'll do is take the original pickup over to Fralin to be rewound and see what he thinks of it, if it's bad then there's a Guitar Center in Richmond I can get my money back at. Spent awhile talking to Lay's and they seem to think it's good and a full restoration is looking at between $6-700...this should be interesting.

Wery interesting. Good thing for me I'm 100% doublebass these days because if this is legit I just helped somebody else land the slab of my dreams. I make no claim that any link I post is legit, etc.

Thankfully I saw it before you posted this, so when I find out it's fake and start banging my head against a wall you don't have to feel any guilt

Works for me! I hope it's real, and if it is, I hope you let me borrow it for a week.

This thing is ridiculous. It's real and the action is the best of any Precision I've ever played of any decade. Taking the pickup to Fralin tomorrow to get it rewound($50!) and he's going to show me some blonde finish work that a local does...I might leave it natural though.

Is that a leather pickguard?

Looks like a sweet bass... Why is the fretboard discolored past the 10th fret?

Pickguard is black but was painted over red and the "JB" is the same paint. You can see the black under it at some parts. The material is odd, it ain't leather that's for sure.

The fretboard is just dirtier past the 10th fret, it may look the same after I clean it. The cleaning may be due to a partial refret...but I'm not so sure.

Thanks, but I won't be happy until I have a Gibson double-neck guitar/6-string bass like Elvis

What a string of good fortune. The way things are going, you'll probably end up buying Leo's original P bass for a quarter.

Congrats, count me amongst the jealous, in the best way possible.

And now I'm experimenting with brake fluid paint removal for the first time....on a 1953 Precision bass
