Before I got my Earthwood, I was looking seriously at Taylor and remember calling Klein about his modification program. This is going back a ways, but my memory jibes with your memory. I also seem to remember Taylor admitting to the tiff.
As far as the bass that is currently in Klein's inventory, $3500 gets you an AB-1 that is as close to perfect as that instrument is going to get. The craigslist bass has known issues, and may also have other problems lurking under the hood. It is impossible to know without doing an in-hand inspection. I have seen these sell for a few hundred more, retail and private sales. Just my .02.
