It did take a good hit. Bob Taylor insisted on overbuilding them, probably because his name was on them. Either that bass was hit in just the right spot or it had somehing big dropped on it. Scary either way, but a great deal if somebody gambles and wins.

I actually talked to Steve Klein about these at Winter NAMM in 1999. He 'off the record" admitted he did not really like the way that Taylor was building them. Part of it was the "overbuilding" or over bracing. I don't remember the cost but he has a program where he will take in the Taylor basses, voice the braces, replace the electronics and a few other things. If I recall, it was about $700 or so years ago. I am sure that has changed now.

As luck would have it..here is a modified one being sold at the shop where Steve Klein works. http://www.kleinguitars.com/luthiersgallery.htm

This just shows how good the deal is on the craigslist one.

Before I got my Earthwood, I was looking seriously at Taylor and remember calling Klein about his modification program. This is going back a ways, but my memory jibes with your memory. I also seem to remember Taylor admitting to the tiff.

As far as the bass that is currently in Klein's inventory, $3500 gets you an AB-1 that is as close to perfect as that instrument is going to get. The craigslist bass has known issues, and may also have other problems lurking under the hood. It is impossible to know without doing an in-hand inspection. I have seen these sell for a few hundred more, retail and private sales. Just my .02.
