I find it slightly scary when Elderly says something needs a setup and lists "as-is".

meh...elderly is a good company from my experience. They take a few days to ship out, whereas the big retailers usually do so the next day, so you have to a little more patient than usual. But it's as close as you can get to big store prices, but still retaining the "mom & pop" mentality when it comes to customer service, price matching the big stores, etc.

Summation: nothing fishy there it seems. just needs a setup.

The odd thing for me is that Elderly could certainly set it up and take out the as-is part and then list it for more...and they definitely know it should be worth more

Ok still at this price Its worth the risk. Why? if its all original and even if the neck was totally shot and unuseable you could part it out and make your money back and then some.

I would be all over this if I had money

I'm somewhat tempted to call and see what specific info I could get out of them, but without it in writing I would never buy this. Which is saying something, since if this were on eBay and didn't have the "as is" part I would buy it in a second. Elderly usually has their vintage instruments overpriced and without any "as is" in the descriptions, this seems highly unusual to me, just trying to put out the caveat emptor

They said i have 48 hours to check it over and return it, regardless of sold as is. Pulled the trigger. Ill let you guys know what shape its in when it gets here. Looking at their other "as is" items, they seem to be pretty detailed about what it needs, so a setup and fret dress is not too big of a deal. But, well see. Thanks for the heads up.

"dress frets, replace missing bridge cover screws, setup, etc. - sold AS-IS"

My internal bass-issue-detector alerts me to the dreaded "ski hump" issues that old Fenders are plagued with.

Well, it appears my order got canceled because somebody bought it before they could update the page... Oh well, maybe this thing would have been more trouble than its worth.

You are prob better off. Sounds like it needs some significant fret work to me.
