The problem is that I've yet to see/play/hear the Steve Bailey Model, so can't give you a qualified comparison, sorry.

Given Steve's sound, I'd guess that the bass has a lot of Mid "Presence", and perhaps not as much Lows as the Am Del.

Again, this is speculation....I can tell you more after we get one in, but really, haven't had much call for it

i played the fretted Steve Bailey 6 today. it does not sound like a Fender. i think for two reasons,

1) the 24 fret fingerboard is ebony which gives it more of a Yamaha Patitucci sound as opposed to a more organic rosewood board that has more warmth
2) the preamp sounds a little 2 dimensional---- highs and lows.

i found the lack of dots or blocks on the fingerboard and small side markers made it very difficult to get a sense of where the heck am i. on a positive note , it is a beautiful bass (mine was sunburst) with a nice neck with very comfortable string spacing. if youre looking for the Fender sound in a six ,i don't think this is it. like most Fender basses i think the preamp can be changed to something fatter but tone wood is tone wood. hopefully the custom shop will offer a custom classic jazz deluxe 6 swamp ash or alder body with rosewood or maple neck at a reasonable price for us that want a more traditional Fender sound. kudos to Fender for a great start on a real 6 string.
