Thumbs down Landing short scale bass guitars

Hi I just wanted to share my experience with everyone so that they might think twice about where to order a custom Bass.I found LANDING BASS on line and it seemed to be all I was looking for.I spoke by email with Jimmy who is the builder and it seemed he had many happy customers. He has a 2 to 3 month wait for a new bass.He had one that was almost complete but required some modifications to be closto the same as the one I wanted. There were also 2 others that I was thinking about but would require the full waiting time.I spoke BY EMAIL at great length and detail with hin but he never fully answered my questions.I almost begged him to call me or give me a phone number where I could call him as I thought that all of my concerns were not being answered by email. He for some reason would not allow that to happen and continued by email. The last night I spoke tio him we were going back and forth with questions and answers so I could decide between two basses.AGAIN I asked him to call me but he wouldnt and just ignored my requests. This went on for about 4hrs until about 2:30am when I decided to go with the one that was almost complete. After countless hrs and trying to make a decision, when I told him which one I wanted,All of a sudden he did not reply to my emails after talking all night long,AGAIN only by email.I tried several time to find out why he stopped communication and still told him of my choice several times. It was not until a day later that he responded and told me that bass was sold and no longer available.WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.I kept asking why he cut off our contact right down to the minute that I decided but he never gave me an answer and just kept repeating that he thoght I wanted the other one.I was very clear after all that time invested about the one I wanted. His business practices are completly unacceptable. For some reason that must be questioned he will not get on the phone.I think he is afraid to give his phone number to anyone incase there is a problem. You will also read nothing but good reviews on his site because I tried to leave a review and it said BAD REVIEWER ACCESS DENIED.How is that Real review of his customers.I dont care how good His basses are according to him and chosen reviews,I would never do business with someone who treated me like that, wasted my time, and would not get on the phone. What is that all about. It has to make you wonder. So anyone out there looking to do business with this man,I would think twice and also wonder where you would be if you had a problem and couldnt even get in touch with him.BAD BAD BUSINESS.

Interesting on a few levels. OP, why did you post this in the Bass Central sponsored forum? They are not even Landing dealers!

On the one hand I don't want to discount what could be an honest description of bad customer service, but OTOH I'd like to hear Jimmy's side of this...

Huh. Interesting story, as mentioned by Bongo, as with ANY story on the "intra-webs", both sides are good to hear. Sorry you had troubles...
That being said, we are not a Landing dealer and I would ask the mods to send this to the appropriate forum (Basses ?).thx.

Just for the record, this has not been my experience at all. Jimmy Wilson has gone out of his way to accommodate my wishes 90% of the time (he refused to do a zero fret even though I really wanted it). He is currently building me a bass and generally I have been quite happy with the process. I find him punctual, honest, forthright and a pleasure to deal with.

I'm guessing Jimmy and the OP got off on the wrong foot and somehow things got off the rails.

I am having a bass built at the moment by Landing. Jimmy has been extremely helpful and responsive during this whole process, answers to all my many emails the next day at the latest. Just received the first pics of mostly finished woodwork. My experience could not have been better.

To the OP: I don't want to sound accusing here, but I can't help noticing this is your second post on the forum, and it does seem somewhat out of the blue. This builder has an excellent reputation on this forum and I can attest to the quality of his customer service. I am not discounting the validity of your story, but rather suggesting that it's not the best idea to come in to a community swinging your fist at a respected member in what seems to be a fairly unresearched manner. I, too, would like to hear Jimmy's response to this.

I respect all all of your dealings with Jimmy Wilson. He has an exellent reputation any place you look. That is why I went to him in the 1st place to purchase a bass.I was very frustrated with the fact that he would not call and would not give a # that I could call him as he wasnt really answering all of the questions in full with each email. When you buy something like this you want to be sure of the details. When I decided on one of the basses that we were discussing right up to that moment,He did not respond until a day later and told me the one I chose was now sold because he thought I wanted the other one. There is no way he thought That was the case.I was very clear with my last email which one I wanted and with no response from him all of a sudden. This could have all been avoided if I was just able to speak to him on the phone.Again with no explanation and just ignoring the requests from the beginning he would not get on the phone.I feel like I wasted alot of time and was somehow screwed at the end with no explanation. For what its worth that is what happened and I would never try to deal with him again. Thanks for listening and those are the facts. And to wideyes, yes this is only my 2nd post but I really felt the need to express my opinion because I was blown away with the way I was treated especially after reading so many good things about this guy.I felt totally screwed and he wasnt willing to do anything about it or even give me any kind of explanation of why he did not respond right after I made a choice. It just didnt make any sense to me.

Oh also as far as why I chose to post this where I did,I am brand new to any kind of forum and may have made a mistake as to where I posted it.When you say they are not even Landing dealers,I dont know who you are referring to or what you mean.I Guess I can Only claim ignorance on this matter.I have never even posted anywhere before and felt so jerked around that I had to voice my opinion somewhere. Please accept my appologies and maybee even guide me in what direction I should have gone.I thought I was posting on a general forum.
Thanks seao2623

Hey Bro, sorry for your experience. I had a less than stellar experience with another builder who has a great reputation myself. Not as bad as what your reporting though. I just got ignored after 3 emails for no reason I can think of.

Perhaps part of it is that these builders *may* be a little bit eccentric in the creation of their babies and if a customer tries to move them in a different direction than they want, they may get miffed and be unable to express what the problem is. Not saying thats the case with Jimmy. Just that sometimes 'artists' can be a little difficult at times. I do consider talented luthiers to be artists.

Ah, OK. The deal is the "Sponsored Forums" belong to specific bass-selling businesses. This "Bass Central" sponsored forum belongs to a store named "Bass Central"--and they don't sell Landing basses. The right place to post this is in the main Basses forum, so maybe if you send a private message to one of the moderators here, they can move this thread to the right section.
