We’re featuring the multi-talented bassist Dave Anderson on this week’s episode of Contrabass Conversations. In addition to serving as Principal Bass of the Louisiana Philharmonic, Dave is a prolific composer, active teacher, and electric bassist. He serves as Principal Bass of the Britt Festival Orchestra in southern Oregon, and he plays in metropolitan New Orleans and beyond in a variety of bands.

Dave’s compositions span the gamut from solo double bass to full symphony orchestra, and his Concerto for Double Bass was commissioned and premiered by Hal Robinson and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is a former board member of the International Society of Bassists, and his Capriccio No. 2 served as the required solo competition piece at the 1997 ISB convention. Hey Jason,
I have seen a few performances of some of Dave's works of You tube, including yours, and I am very interested in them. I like some of his bigger works, like the sonata and what not, but I also really like the Caprice's. I checked out really good music .com and they have a few of his pieces, but not the caprice's. I am wondering where or how I might get the music for these? Hope school is going well and your not overworking yourself too much.

Hi Jeremy,
I have been there and looked. They have a few pieces there, but not the ones I'm looking for. I haven't recieved a response from jason yet about the specific pieces that I'm looking for, but I understand he is really busy at the moment. The ones I'm looking for are the caprice's for double bass. Jason performed one and posted it on youtube and there was another performance of a different one on youtube as well. they sound amazing and are the shorter, showier kind of piece I'm looking for. thanks for your response but I am still on the search.

Right--that one is different. That was the required piece for the 1997 ISB solo competition. It's published in Liben's "Family Album Volume 2"--

I also scanned youtube . . . the "Capriccio IV" is the only other one I saw (let me know if there are others!) That one is actually the last movement of "Four Short Pieces" for unaccompanied double bass. Those are also really great pieces--highly recommended! And they are in print as well.

Thanks again, that is exactly what I'm looking for. I haven't seen any other ones on you tube, but you never know, Maybe I'll try to add to that databass.
