Bluegrass Convert

Hey, guys! I normally live on the guitar side, but there's precious little about bluegrass over there.

I've been into BG for awhile and love the simplicity and musicianship of it. I guess being from the Ozark-area it's in my blood! I played upright a little in high school orchestra messing around, but I found it uncomfortable and remember those kids trying to lug those things to and from the music building (ughh), spent more time playing violin, live in a small house, and came to bluegrass via orchestra-punk rock, so I really don't want to play upright. I might consider something like the Kona Walkingbass EUB. But I love the sound of BG and want to find some people to jam with at a slow jam or something. I live in SC Indiana now, where bluegrass is a big thing, but underground. I'm wondering A) if anyone on here knows of an open-minded jam group in that area and B) why there's such a fixation on "appearance" in what seems to me to be a "come-as-you-are," genre?

Also, I found bluegrassbassplace.com and registered, I'm just cooling my heels until I'm approved. Wow that's a lot. Thanks!

Welcome home. At least that is how I feel about bluegrass music. I prefer the Seldom Scene/Country Gentleman side of the spectrum. Traditional haunting harmonies alongside musicianship that create what I think of as 'Appalacian Jazz'. Our spectrum may be narrow, like visible light, but don't be confused. Bluegrass is NOT a come-as-you-are genre. Play a Martin D-25, Gibson F-5, Gibson RB-75, '58 Kay and you'll have the respect of your peers. Veer far from the beaten path and you better have the talent and respect to back it up! I don't like it either. That's just the state of our little musical back-water. With it's good and bad, this is the sound that resonates in my soul. Peace.

Wow,
I'vegot a Suzuki from the same era that looks almost identical to that one. Different tuners. And mahogany back and sides, but could be the Martin's brother otherwise.
Just wish it was worth the same dollars.
