Economical nylons

I have a beater ply with high action that I'd like to use for bluegrass. Are the Innovations about the lowest price, "viable" set? I also read about Labellas, but unable to locate a retail source for these.

I would appreciate recommendations for a low-cost, low tension set, as well as sources from which to purchase. Thanks!

some people just use weedwhacker cable. comes in a variety of widths. I can't speak to sound, and most people just amplify their plys when they do that.

Thanks. Most of my playing is just casual sans amp--small rooms, back yards, etc. From what I've read the WW perhaps aren't as substantial-sounding as some of the other sets.

Bob's got SuperNils for $85.

LaBella Supernil Upright Bass Strings at Gollihur Music - Double Bass, Upright Bass, String Bass Specialists

Sounds like what you're looking for.

He and his son are a trusted part of our community. No worries about dealing with him. I can't tell you if SuperNils are any good or not, but they sound like they might be up your alley.

Honestly, I think you should look at Innovation strings instead.
They are *much* better than Supernils, which are not a good investment, IMHO, and with all due respect.

I would strongly suggest the Innovation strings also. You can get them from Bob too. The silver or golden slaps are very gut like in tension and diameter.

Thanks much. I agree that the description of the s-nils looks a little sketchy: roundwound feel, lack of definition/clarity, etc. are aspects I don't think I'd enjoy.
