history of the "doghouse" name

I've googled and searched on this forum a bit but cannot find indication of the history of the "doghouse" name. Can someone hook me up with a link? Sorry if I missed the thread here. Thanks.

I always just figured it was because it's big enough for a dog to sleep in.

I read that when Leo Fender came up with the Precision Bass, he said "This will allow bass players to get out of the doghouse" or something to that extent. I think it was from an article in Bass Player magazine, but it was quite some time ago, and I can't be sure.

You figured right, DURRL. Believe me. I was there.
Nathan, I figure Leo's line was just a sales pitch from some publicity suit who did some research. We and those before us many, many years before Leo was born were calling it that.
Before that, it was "Bull Fiddle".

It's good to have an answer from someone that was around pre-electric basses. It sounds about right that it was a marketing pitch. That Leo Fender was a slippery one. Of all the nicknames of the double bass, doghouse is my favorite.

I always liked Bull Fiddle the best.

Oh, you play the double bass?

Nicest doghouse I've ever heard of was owned by a guy in Vermont in the '60's.

He, his dog, and two Italian Beauties (well, basses) all fit in a VW Bug and traveled to coffee houses to do solo bass concerts.

How did he get TWO doghouse basses in a VW Bug? I just can't picture it...

It's as good a story as any.......I loved it when I first heard it.......whether he did or didn't depends on your imagination and sense of humor. Maybe one on top and one inside.

You just need the right roofrack :

...or maybe an open top to stick your bass through :

Did you need to remove the seats?

The earlier bugs had no headrests or elongated back rests. Basses went right in through the passenger door bottom first, back down over the seats. Mine was a 62. Very little heat and no balls what so ever. I still loved it.
Basses fit nicley in most cars in the days before the advent of head rests.

Spot-on, as always.

Edit: Why is this in 'Bluegrass'?

I know, huh.

Molly, my ability to annoy people isn't limited to the jazzers.
