After all, he's only playing bass for Del McCoury, the most IBMA awarded group in history. I'd love to see him get it someday. He's a good one and a good guy on top of it as well.
Missy has been awarded this award several times and deservedly so. As has the Bubby. Both of them Kay bass players.
Darrin Vincent has long been known by the bluegrass insiders as a wonderful, solid bass player, though it's only been since the formation of Dailey & Vincent that the general public has seen his bass skills on a wider basis.
Marshall Wilborn is one of my absolute favorites. From Jimmy Martin to The Johnson Mountain Boys to The Lynn Morris Band to Longview and now, to Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper. He has the credentials. He can cut the bass. I'd love to see him get it.
Then, Bales, who has probably played more bluegrass bass over the past 2 decades than all of the above combined. That's not to discredit any of the other nominees, but hopefully, with his participation in The Dan Tyminski Band this year, this will be the year for Bales. It's long overdue. He's the one many modern players have patterned their playing styles after and I hope he get the award, finally.
I'm not nominated again this year, so that takes a little pressure off the eventual winner. Very little. |

Maybe this will be his year.
I did think about attending Cherokee earlier in the week. Actually Katie, my daughter, and me went to the Olla Belle Reed Festival in Lansing, NC on Saturday. It's pretty small as compared to Cherokee and more singer/songwriter/oldtime oriented. I know Del knows all about some Olla Beel Reed. I met her sons and Katie caught a pic of us as we were introduced.
Olla Belle was the writer of "High on a Mountain" and "I've Endured" long associated with Del McCoury.
I'll catch you in Nashville in October, Alan. |

Agree Barry Bales is long overdue ! But the other guys are great as well......
Awards suck as they limit stuff too dang much... Usually a popularity issue and not who's on top at the time....
In todays touring acts Mike Anglin is definately the man for Lonesome River Band as far as out there everyday and adding and driving the band in sycopation with Sammy's banjo ! |

Agree with Barry and the rest of the nominees. Another outstanding player I saw this year was Andy Moritz of Cadillac Sky- outstanding- classically trained I believe.

It's a stretch to call him a "Bluegrass" player. I'm sure he could, but I saw two Issacs shows last summer & here wasn't a single Bluegrass song played at either show.
