Ideas for a monitor

I play at smaller jams usually, but recently I played at a larger jam and noticed I could not hear myself very well.

I was thinking about a small in-ear monitor. Didn't want to bring an amp since some of the "old timers" frown on "electrified instruments."

I already have a bridge pickup wired, so I just need some ideas for something in-ear that still allows me to hear everyone else playing (i.e. does not block the ear up)

Anyone else been down this road before......?

maybe one of those guitar headphone amps that plug directly into the guitar (in your case the bridge pup) and one ear bud so you can hear yourself in one ear and everyone else in the other? Those are around $30.

You might think you can't hear yourself, but just stop playing for a few bars and listen to the difference. Nonetheless, basses are loudest 10 to 20 feet infront of them, and sometimes in a large jam the person playing the bass can have trouble hearing what they are playing.

I usually try to position myself infront of a hard surface to hear myself better - either a wall or window. Playing in a corner works really well. I did this the other night and I had a lot more fun playing since I wasn't digging in as hard all night.

Happy pickin.
