| You might think you can't hear yourself, but just stop playing for a few bars and listen to the difference. Nonetheless, basses are loudest 10 to 20 feet infront of them, and sometimes in a large jam the person playing the bass can have trouble hearing what they are playing.
I usually try to position myself infront of a hard surface to hear myself better - either a wall or window. Playing in a corner works really well. I did this the other night and I had a lot more fun playing since I wasn't digging in as hard all night.
