Violins Etc., Texas’ number one string bass resource, will host a “Bluegrass, Country, Blues and Rockabilly” String Bass workshop with vaunted bassists Marshall Willborn and Mark Rubin on Sunday, November 11. There will be 3 hours of instruction, with the instructor of your choice, with a short break in the middle starting at 2pm. Call for costs.

The Instructors:

Marshal Willborn: There is simply no one more experienced or influential in the field of Bluegrass bass as Marshall Willborn. The Austin native has been a touring, performing, recording bass player for the last 25 years, performing, and / or recording with Jimmy Martin, The Johnson Mountain Boys, Hazel Dickens, Del McCoury, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Lynn Morris Band, and most recently, award winning fiddler Michael Cleveland. He has toured extensively around the US, Canada, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Australia, and was voted Bass Player of The Year in 1998, by Bluegrass Now magazine's Readers Choice Awards.

In addition to private instruction, and 3 instruction videos for The Murphy Method, Marshall has taught at workshops at the Wintergrass Festival in Tacoma, WA, Camp Bluegrass in Levelland, TX, Bluegrass Week in Elkins, WV, The Swananoa Gathering, NC, and Sore Fingers Week in England.

His workshops address the issues of time, the metronome as a practice tool, simplicity, and tone.

Mark Rubin: Among many other things, Austin based bassist Mark Rubin is a frequent contributor to Bass Player Magazine and co-Author of the popular DVD “Slap Bass – the Ungentle Art.” He has lectured and taught bass performance style workshops at the WOMAD Festival (Toronto Canada, 1993,) American Festival of Fiddle Tunes (Port Townsend WA, 2000-2004,) Living Traditions annual “KlezKamp” (Upstate NY, 1996-present,) KlezFest UK (London 2007,) the Festival of Jewish Culture (Kracow Poland, 2003, 2005, 2007,) Edmonton Folk Festival (Edmonton Canada, 1996,) Winnipeg Folk Festival (Winnipeg Canada, 2006,) Calgary Folk Festival (Calgary Canada 2006,) Old Settlers Bluegrass Festival, 1992-1996 as well as many others.

His workshop will focus on intermediate to advanced players, addressing set up tips, amplification techniques, “slap bass” styles and “total musician” bass concepts.

I attended a workshop by Marshall at the old Peaceful Valley Bluegrass Festival in Shinhopple New York. He was very kind and helpful. Afterwards, the two of us stood out in a field, bass to bass and I got a tutorial on right hand technique. He is a very good, patient teacher who was really interested in helping me become a better musician.

Accessability of the real stars is one of the reasons I've played bluegrass so long, gone to so many shows and festivals and made so many friends along the way.
