Newbie - Buying a Bass- Bluegrass vs. Others

I am totally new and trying to get educated enough to buy my first upright acoustic bass for bluegrass. Are there differences in the instruments used for bluegrass vs other forms of music? I am looking at a few used instruments in the N Alabama/TN area. Specifically an Engelhardt EM-1 for $900 that seems like a good deal but I don't know enough to say yet. Any advice would be appreciated.

The EM-1 will probably need set up and strings. So. check out local luthier too.

There's a complete education in the Newbie Links on the 'Basses' page - find it here: BASS FORUM LINKS (Newbie Links): PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING NEW TOPICS

Really, it will give you a lot of insight.

I've got an Engelhardt that I play bluegrass with, and I love it. For the money, it is the bass I would get if I had to do it again. A used one would be even better for me.

They don't get a lot of love here. You'll probably get some advice of "better" basses, and they're probably right, but for the money and what I play, it works for me.

dvmweb has a good point. The luthier makes a big difference in whatever bass you get. Check him out early. Enjoy the ride!

KLand,

A lot of bluegrassers do marvelous things on an Englehardt. That said, play any bass before you buy it. If you're new to the double bass (you guys are getting to me, I wrote double bass instead of upright bass without even thinking!) take someone who plays along to test drive it.

Also, look at the PM I'm sending you.)

Enjoy the ride!
