.174 F# string - thru body?

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently my custom 8-string has every string strung thru the body (I've got those triple lock down single string bridges that Warmoth has), with the exception of the low F# string. The B-string is a .140 and a tight fit, but fits through. I find that the F# doesn't have the same sustaining properties that the rest of them have, and I'm almost positive that the top-loading of the string is a big factor in this.

Anybody have any suggestions to get it to fit through the body?

You might be able to get a custom string at http://octave4plus.com/

Hi.

The limited experience I have with Warwick DL .175 string would make me guess that the break angle on the saddle would become too severe when strung through body. Getting that thick string to bend so sharply would most likely do more harm than good since the thinner windings would be behind the saddle.

I top-load F#, B and E on ABM monorail copies.

I didn't notice any sustain difference between strung-through and top-loaded E on my bass.

What I do have noticed is that the sustain diminishes gradually as the string gets thicker. IOW fretted B has less sustain than open B and fretted C on the F# string has less sustain than the fretted C on the A string.

Regards
Sam
