1966 P-Bass Pickguard woes

Sign in to disble this ad
My lovely '66 P-Bass needs a new pickguard, after I stepped on my cable during a gig (how many thousands of times has this happened before it yanked my input jack out, taking half the pickguard with it?) And yes, I did have my cable through my strap; it was a freak acccident.

Problem is, I can't seem to find a pickguard with holes in the right spots, or the correct number of holes ( 14 ) and I don't really want to drill new holes to make one fitl, as it's a bass which had certainly already seen its share of hard living before it came to me 20 years ago. Fender has told me that 1966 was a transitional year, and that neither newer pickguards or earlier reissues will fit....

Even though I've got other basses, they all have other tonal duties that don't correspond to those covered by the P-bass. I've resorted to buying a Jay Turser P-bass copy in the meantime...it's not so bad for the money once I set it up right and put some Fender flats on it, but it really can't compare, and my drummer is getting pretty irritated...not to mention my sense of tone.

Does anyone have any advice or experience getting custom pickguards made, or ideas on where to get an actual one?

Maybe this place can help. They make custom pickguards. I'm sure it will not be cheap but if you have no other alternative it might be worth it.

I recommend pickugard heaven. They might have the template on hand, and if they don't, they'll usually offer you a discount if you have something they can add to their library.
