| I've used original Kluson reverse tuners. A NOS set. They're fine, but the gearing doesn't compare (backlash, tuning precision, ease of operation) to the more modern Gotoh renditions (GB8, GB9, GBR640) of this same tuner. IMO, the increase in gear ratio simply allows the tuner to do its job better. With the new 640s, Gotoh has effectively eliminated all of the design "eccentricities" of the earlier models.
But, if you're on a budget, you may want to "invest" that $20-25 cost difference you mentioned into other areas of bass improvement. Depends on how much you value good functioning from your tuners.
You mentioned other "modern tuners". Which ones do you have in mind for comparison?
