2006 Stingray - action at the nut to high?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about getting the nut slots re-cut deeper, because the action is a bit tall for me. When I changed strings to a larger gauge (.045 -.105), the E seemed higher than with the previous .100 E string.

It almost appears like the action gets higher as the strings get bigger at the nut, and this is the new compensated nut. Anyone else noticing this?

Usually you have to widen the nut slightly so the 105 string sits in it correctly. See if you can see a gap between the string and the groove from the string not sitting all the way down in the groove.
On all my Musicmans, it seems the nuts are cut perfectly for a 100, and I always have to mod for a 105 to fit right.

Yep...you're right there is a gap under the string. What a nice thing for the folks at Musicman to do to us bassists.

Do you think it could be covered under warranty?

They slot the nut for the gauge of string that will be installed at the factory, not the one you may switch it out for after you buy it.
Why would they put too large of a slot in their string nuts at the time of manufacture?
Then it wouldn't play well and would rattle and buzz.

A nut is a modifiable and replaceable item.
You use it, you modify it for your individual purpose, it eventually wears out no matter what, and you replace it.

Seems easy to me.
