2009 J bass custom rebuild

Sign in to disble this ad
I am going to order a replacement neck for my J bass. I don't like th efretwork and I want an ebony board w/ss frets and posibly bubinga neck wood. I ve been looking at Carvin, Warmoth, and USA. With Carvin, they will shape the headstock; but do not drill tuner holes. A setback for me. USA's come with no nut. I could work with that. Warmoth's have a fretboard overhang past the 20th fret, I am not keen on that; and I am not sure if they offer 5 piece necks. My budget is around $350. And, for the record it is a MiM. If anyone thinks it's a dumb investment; then please don't type it. I am doing this for me, not resale value. My plan is to have an excellent bass in the end. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

The Carvin neck is the best deal if you don't mind the headstock shape being non-Fender. It says they do drill holes for tuners on shaped headstocks. They are the Carvin tuners, so they would be smaller holes than your standard Fender tuners. You could get the neck and tuners from Carvin and still come in under budget!

Warmoth will make a neck for you without the overhang - I know because I have one:

(It's my Matt Sharp tribute....if I'd tried a little harder, I'd have realized that Matt's bass has the overhang, hahaha.)

BTW, this bass has been together for 16 years, on hundreds of gigs, and tossed/fallen off tens of stages. The only time I've ever touched the tuning machines is when I have to tune to OTHER bozos and the neck is still ARROW straight. Warmoth FTW!!!

LOL-Two different viewpoints, very hard to decide. I don't mind smaller tuner holes, I presume that hipshots(tuners) would fit? With Warmoth; the bubinga does sound nice.

I missed the part about you wanting a bubinga neck. That isn't an option with Carvin. Going with a five piece neck would put you over budget. But you could do another wood like mahogany or walnut. Looks like you could get a Warmoth bubinga neck with ebony fretboard and stainless steel frets for $340. Warmoth makes quality stuff too.

Are there any disadvantages to NOT having a 5-piece neck? Also, Carvin offers their maple necks in an unfinished option; wouldnt I HAVE to finish the maple neck to prevent warpage?

(I am liking the bubinga/ebony combo)

Not sure on the Carvin stuff, but, Warmoth necks get dipped in something magic when they're done, before they're finished. I don't know what it is, but my own ~16 y.o. bass (and another bass I built around the same time which I sold) both have unfinished Warmoth necks (no lacquer or clear coat or anything) and are still 100% bulletproof to this day, even though the old catalog said that not ordering a finish voided the warranty. Ha ha! I also hate lacquer on necks, so it works out for me.

Thanks man, I did go with Carvin. 5 piece maple 2 walnut stripes. Ebony board, SS med-jumbos. I am going to lightly tung oil it. Now, I am trying to figure which tuners will fit on a 17/32 tuner hole???

Does anyone have any experience in the electronics in a '09 mim J? What brand of potentiometers are good replacements? And does replacing the .05 capacitor make any difference?

I want a rock tone. Thats priority. However; jazz, classical, RnB, and country will also be played. I tend to stay away from the "green day" tone. The dude from GD is good, but the sound is a bit too wired for me. I suppose something along the lines of Rush, but also I want to be able to dial in a modern a la Christopher Wolstenholme (Muse). In an ideal world I would like extreme versatility without going active.
