Funny question. I bought a 70's Ripper a few months back, and the previous owner had replaced the bridge with a "period correct" 3-point bridge.
Unfortunately, the saddle height of this bridge was not correct. It was way too high for my the neck angle on my bass, so I had to take it off and find something else.
Now I have a Gibson 3-point I'm not using and should probably sell. I have no way to verify the age of the bridge, except that it looks kind of old, so I'm just going to have to take the seller's word on it.
What should I ask for it? |

If You dont want to just put it up there and see how it goes, look at the cloced auctions on 'em.
Unless it's 60's old, it shouldn't be very valuable though. IIRC, a near mint 70's one was about $100 a while back.
I have absolutely no experience about Gibson bass bridges, but generally if a suspected Gibson part doesn't say Gibson (or Schaller in easily identifiable parts) somewhere, the price drops dramatically.
Pics are always helpful when guessing whether something is genuine or not.
The 3 point "oil-rig" bridge was copied a lot back in the 70's, so my guess without the pics would be an aftermarket or MIJ one.

The 70s Gibson three-point bridge should look like this Gibson three point bridge
It doesn't say Gibson and doesn't have any writing. Make sure you show a pic of the underside - which is where they usually vary. Copies will have different undersides, "made in Japan" etc etc |

YMMV. Take pretty pictures and write up a nice auction description.

Regarding the authenticity, I have a picture of the top of the bridge up on photobucket, but not the bottom. I can take one later, but there are definitely no markings anywhere on it.
I feel kind of funny putting an item on ebay saying "somebody told me this is from the 70's, but there's no way to tell for sure".
Anyway, here's a picture of the bridge just for fun. |

| | Registered User | | | | | the posts Actually, I just remembered, there is another difference - the 70s Gibsons had a different thread on the posts to some (or maybe all?) of the newer three points around. I'm guesing imperial vs metric.
New three point posts won't fit into the post holes on a 70s bass for example.
I haven't studied this exhaustively though, not sure when this changed, and how absolute it is. The Hipshot replacements come with two sets of posts IIRC, so that they can fit either post hole. |

Since the posts from this bridge fit a '76 Ripper, I'm feeling a little more confident about this thing. |

In fact, all long winded "expert" opinions aside, this is the only correct answer to any "what's it worth" thread. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
