34" scale 20 or 21- fret neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, I want to purchase a fender jazz bass deluxe V5 body (2009) that I'm pretty sure came with a 22- fret neck on it. I can't seem to find an after market 22 fret neck and I was just told by a dealer that a 20 fret neck would fit. Does this sound correct to anyone? Would it intonate properly? He said as long as its a deluxe V5 neck
Thanks

Mounting a 20 fret neck in a body designed for 22 will result in improper intonation if you don't move the bridge (or possibly the saddles can move enough). You need the distance from the nut to the 12th fret equal to the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge saddle (+- for intonation adjustment).

Here's one designed to fit 22 fret deluxe Fenders.

(1) It would not intonate correctly (2) It would change the scale length

Yup. The deluxe body is NOT the standard body.

Walk away.

Yeah, I was trying to avoid warmoth. Their necks are to wide for my preference.

Ok, what about a 20 fret neck on a 21 fret body? He says all I have to do is adjust the bridge saddles. Is there a special bridge that would allow for a single fret adjustment?

You would need enough room on the bridge for the saddles to move back the distance between frets 20 and 21, or physically move the whole bridge. Think about what position the 12th fret will be in and calculate from there. A neck is built to a specific scale length, which is exactly twice the distance between the nut takeoff point and the 12th fret.

Oh ok, I measured a little less than 3/4 inch. Hmm, looks like its gonna be pretty tight.

To wide, or to thick? My Warmoth neck I used on the bass I built is the same with as my jazz bass, but it is thicker, which I love

Hmmm can't remember, It might have even been a p-bass warmoth neck but whatever it was it just seem bulky to me iirc.
