I think he thought you wanted to tune your bass to EADG and have the low B above the G instead of below the E, which is weird.

hmmm, this thread concerns me a bit... well at least a couple years ago I took my 5 string ibanez edc-705 and decided I like the though of a high C a lot better then the low B so I just simply went out, bought a pack of 6 string bass strings, threw out the low B and stung up like normal except it was EADGC. I'm certainly no master of bass set ups but I haven't really noticed much a difference at all, certainty nothing detrimental has happened since my bass still plays like it always has(as far as I can remember). Or if I did make it worse it wasn't much worse cause she still plays pretty well. I took my bass in to a local music shop sometime after I did the switch(6months-1year) and asked if they could maybe check it out and get the action lower. They couldn't spot anything wrong with the neck and said my action was low as it could go, and even commented on how well it played. Though I have no clue how much he actually knew or not.

I'm certainly not giving anyone advice, just relating what has happened to me. It seems maybe I was lucky and didn't muss anything up as badly as I could have.

yup

i have decent experience with different tunings. if you're trying to make a 5er made for BEADG go to EADGC, i honestly don't think you're going to need to switch string gauge. the problems that i think are unavoidable are neck, intonation and action. you might run into problems with the strings not fitting in the nut as well, but if that happens you can try a heavier gauge to help that. you're going to need to adjust the other stuff though, for sure.
