Question 5 string tuning question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Godin A5 fretless, tuning BEADG. I've been thinking about tuning to EADGC. Has anyone done this, and has there been any complications with the neck?

Thanks,

Ray

There should be no problems with this if you use proper gauged strings. Just making sure you're not planning on using the same string you have on there.

You'll likely need to adjust the trussrod, but nothing major.

What gauge would you suggest? I'm currently using Rotosound Tru Electric Bass Black nylon wraps. B-.135 E-.115 A-.100 D-.75 G-.65.

You're going to want to use a set with a string designed to be tuned to C... Not sure if they do a True Electric Bass in a .115/.100/.075/.065/.045ish... but that seems to be ideal.

Cool, thanks. I'll see what I can get in those gagues.

I've done it

I had to adjust the truss rod, and of course after that I had to totally redo the action and intonation but that goes without saying.

The gauges I'm using right now: .100, .080, .065, .045, 0.26 (a guitar string).

Ideally you want the C to be around .030 or .032. To thin and it's loose and guitar-like, too thick and they tend to break (at least in my experience).

Are you sure you want to go that heavy? What is the scale length of your bass? Using those standard gauges on a 35" scale bass, my strings are pretty tight.
