Anyone know if the original 57 P or the reissue 57 P has a string mute under the bridge cover? Any thoughts on string mutes good or bad in general?

I don;t think the new ones come equipped, but all you need to do is stick a strip of pickup mount foam under the cover. This works great and sounds awesome - a great way to get that plucky thump/thumpy pluck sound |

Depending on the situation, of course.

I ask because the 57 RI basses come with the covers not installed and there is no mute in the supplied bridge cover. So... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Does that mean your opinion is the cover(s) should be left off, put on, or put on and a mute added to the bridge cover as the original 57 had? As I want the original look of the bass with the covers I may get two, one with and one without the mute. Thoughts? Thank you!

Covers? ALWAYS!
Mute? Your choice.
Just leave the foam loose so you can pull it out.

| | | | You shouldn't have a problem putting a foam strip under the bridge cover or probably under the strings too. You can just kind of shove it in there so that you can easily switch between a muted sound and a non-muted sound by simply removing it. I think the covers look awesome but can't stand the covers when playing a bass. When I want to mute my jazz I just put a foam strip under the strings right up by the bridge. Basically you don't need 2 bridge covers just a foam strip that gets the sound you want, no need to fasten the foam to the cover.

I did it for a while, it worked great. I like the look of the cover but whacked my hand on it one too many times while playing some rock covers.... a few bruised fingernails and I took that thing off.
