62 Jazz Bass Neck on a 62 Precision Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 62 Reissue Fender Precision bass. I love the bass but can't warm to the neck which is super wide at the nut even for a precision bass.
I am looking at purchasing a 62 reissue Jazz Bass neck online from the stratosphere on ebay and swapping out the necks.

From what I read online jazz bass and precision bass necks are swapped out all the time with ease however when i spoke to my local luthier he seemed a bit sceptical as to whether the jazz bass neck would fit on my precision bass.

I would really appreciate some input on this one.

Is it possible?

Anything I need to look out for?

Here are the specs of the precision bass..

FenderŪ Products

Here are the specs of the jazz bass neck that I am looking at purchasing...

Vintage USA 62 RI Fender Jazz BASS NECK & TUNERS Guitar | eBay

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Both necks should have 2 1/2" neck specs. The only thing you may need to do, is to plug and drill the jazz neck to match the screw holes in the body. All my Pbasses have jazz necks on them.

The necks on 2 Fender RI should have the neck bolt in the same spot, anyway.

Blasphemy! I would actually put the p-neck on j-body. But, according to logic, that's actually what you did by putting the j-neck on the p-body. Who's stupid now? Most likely, me.

The Fender AV62RI Precision and Jazz necks are meant to be interchangable with no modification needed, unless your body cavity is on the smaller end of acceptable tolerance and the neck you choose is on the wider end of acceptable tolerance... the fit might be tight. I have found, however, that the 62RI necks made in Japan are not necessarily a flawless fit. The USA models are supposed to be.

I've had some experience at this. I had 2 AV62RI J basses for quite awhile, just got rid of them about a year ago and on one I put a AV62RI P-Bass neck and on the other I put a AV57RI P-Bass neck. Up until I started getting some arthritis in my hands, I loved those big necks. Mine required no drilling at all and they popped right into place with ease! So I know I'm coming at this from the reverse of what you're doing, but I would imagine you wouldn't have a problem. Just my 2 cents worth! Good luck! Keep groovin'!

So how did that jazz neck work out Leroy? I'm thinking of ordering the same type and would like to know if you're happy with both the neck and the stratosphere experience.

cheers.

I just posted a thread the other day about how I took the P neck off of my P bass and put a Jazz neck on and couldn't be happier. I don't like P necks. Some people do. It's all personal choice.

I think it's a great combo. I like P basses but never liked the necks. I am really happy with the Jazz neck on mine. Mine's a MIJ 62 re-issue P body and a MIJ 62 re-issue Jazz neck. Love the bass now. I bought my Jazz neck from the exact same dealer as you. Great dealer, great neck.

Enjoy!
