73 P semi-resto: where to start?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a 73 Precision(thanks, Bassnw)- it's been defretted, refinished(poorly)& had an early Badass bridge installed. There's also some kind of piezo under the bridge; the original owner used some sort of outboard buffer or something & at this point the piezo is not hooked up.
So after playing it a bit I'm pretty certain I want to refret it, & possibly refinish it. I dug a bit but didn't see much that was very recent; what does a good refret cost & can anyone recommend a good shop near Vacaville? Thanks.

Question Anybody?

I know a few places but I've never had this kind of work done & I don't want to gamble on this one.

METAL? Hmmnn...Dunno much about how that requires frets that are different from other styles, except that I assume you need low action.

I had a '69 P-bass neck refretted by RS GuitarWorks in Winchester, KY. They are top notch and do work for plenty of "Stars."

I am very pleased by their work. They also did a restore/nitro refinish on my '55 P-bass, which is discussed in this thread:

A (vintage) 1955 Classic P-bass Reborn!

Firstly, thank you, Jim- I was getting lonely.
Next, the *metal* reference was just a stab at getting some kind of attention- thought I was invisible there for a minute.
In all seriousness, I'm looking for a local(Northern California)guy so I can avoid shipping & also get a feel for who I'm working with. I actually have a line on one; coincidentally I played the bass for the first time w/my band earier today & am actually reconsidering the refret; it plays very nicely as is.

Hey Steve--I recently had some work done by a guy in Berkeley named Jeff Suits. A bit of fret crowning, setup, and electronics work and he did an excellent job. He says his specialty is detailed fret work. He showed me some work he's done on other instruments and it looked quite good. I can get his # if you're interested. He's not cheap.

There's Gary Brawer in SF who has the PLEK fretting machine. AFAIK he's the best (and most expensive) in town. Heard nothing but good about Michael Dolan in Santa Rosa but that's a bit of a haul. Dave Lynch's Guitar Workshop in Sac can be good BUT only if Dave himself does the work--not one of the kids up front.

There's an older guy around Fairfield who advertises guitar building and amp repair on the SFBay Craigslist. Forget his name but by his website it looks like he knows his stuff. HTH.
