81 L1K Neck Refinish Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 81 G&L L-1000 HOG/Rosewood that I picked up not too long ago and it's been played but in good shape and sounds fantastic. The way I know it was played is that all the finish is worn off the back of the neck in the sweet spot area only. I wouldn't mind leaving the bass the way it is, but the worn area is a bit of a drag on the action, and I don't think it's good to not have it NOT sealed as far as dirt and humidity exposure.

I have the bass polished and setup and the tone is great and I'm playing it in the band I'm playing in and would like to preserve the bass and keep playing it. Would it make sense to use some kind of sealer oil on just the worn through part to preserve the mojo look (which is fine with me) or would I be better off putting a new finish on just the back of the neck?

Thanks in advance for any advice suggestions or what not to do's.

Reb
