90s Peavey - Truss Rod/Nut Problem?

I bought and reloaded this bass over the last year with new stuff and then after all that - I never noticed untill last night that the truss rod did not have a standard allen hex adust end...

So I got a socket on the nut, and turning to the truss "loosen" direction because neck is too bowed, it loosened the nut, not turning rod...

Now I wonder what I should do to get this back to where I can loosen truss rod and not turn nut so it comes off rod end...

Is this a standard way trusses were back someday?

At least right now, nothing is broken... yet

Was the neck backbowed?

Then I'm not seeing a problem - put the nut back on, and tighten it until you have the correct amount of relief while tuned to pitch with the strings on it that you're going to use...

You might want to put a little grease or vasoline on the threads - but not enough to squish out and possibly get on any of the wood...

So the tightening direction of the nut is the same direction that turning an allen wrench would "tighten" or bow more the neck,,, in my humble opinion, I dont want to tighten rod, but loosen it in the neck... me thinks

If the neck is forward bowed, you would tighten the trussrod, to straighten the neck.

If you tighten the nut (turn it Clockwise while looking down the length of the neck from the top) you will straighten the neck which is how you remove the forward bow.

That is what I needed to know, this setup is new to me and I did not want to bow it worse...

And yes, it sounds like I was a bit confused to begin with.

The manual is on the Peavey website, old Peavey bass or not. They spent a good portion of the manual explaining this procedure. Check it out. Countless basses have been dinked up due to guesswork. Careful, now!

I'm taking time to let neck things settle, but yes, you guys were right and the neck is bowed less after tightening the nut down a couple tads...

I don't know why I transposed how the nut would effect the truss, oh well, now I've learned something new, thanks everyone!

Now this bass will truely rock...

Make sure you have the right size socket. That nut is soft brass, and you dont want to round off the edges.

Make sure that you don't tighten past the end of the threads. Frequently with older Peaveys it is a good idea to put on a few small washers as spacers before putting the truss nut back on.

Yes, washers are a good idea. Long ago I managed to get to the end of the thread and destroy a truss rod! Oops. It was an old martin-style one which I was able to replace pretty easily by sliding it out and sliding a new one in.

The newer two-way type truss rods have an active rod and a passive rod working together with threads at both ends. There are good descriptions at stewmac.com

I absolutely cannot find any detailed setup information on the Peavey website. All I found was this crappy manual which is super high-level and contains nothing specific like what kind of wrench to use, or how the truss rod nut is installed, etc.
