About to attempt my first refret. Advice?

My friend was nice enough to let me at an old guitar he owns to refret it. I dont expect a perfect job to be honest, but I'm going to give it a go. The guitar isnt worth the price of a refret (250), so its worth our trying to do it for just material cost. External to fretwire, a radius sanding block, and some files for the fret edges, what will I need? I have a regular hammer, and wax wrap hammer to get them in. I have nippers. I have random little quirky tools.

Is there anything I HAVE TO HAVE? What grit sandpaper to reradius the neck? How should I adjust the truss rod when I reradius? I have The Guitar Repair book from Dan Ewanlks...*cough* of stewmac.com. What else?

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

Henry Ford

Strive for perfection from the onset. It doesn't matter if you get there. But strive.

You have Dan Erlewine's book. Read the chapters on installing and dressing frets a couple of times. It will answer all your questions. There are details that you won't understand until you begin doing the work. That's o.k. You'll understand it when you need to.

There is no reason to "re-radius" the fingerboard unless there is damage.

There are recommendations for many different tools in the book. Some of the tools do the same thing. They all work. Buy what you think you'll like. If you continue to do this work you will buy them all. Most will sit in a drawer.

It is important to let the tool do the work. None of these tasks require strength. The force should be no more than it takes to keep the tool on track. Unless you are a very experienced tool user it will take some time to get used to the feel of the tools doing the work.

there are tons of fretting videos on youtube, some better than others. check them out, avoiding any from generic instructional "content farms" like expert village or whatever, which make money by throwing any old crap up there to get search engine hits.
