acoustic bass buzzing

Sign in to disble this ad
hello there!

Recently bought a new fender acoustic bass, loving every minute of it except for an annoying buzzing coming from what seems to be only the A string, on the 3rd fret. What gives?

I checked a few sites that said maybe the action of the neck may be off, and it may be a bridge issue, or maybe it's the string, or me. I'm not really sure what to think. I'm in Vancouver canada, could it be the humidity, or lack thereof?

Should I run it back to the shop and have them check it out? Is there a home fix? I'm somewhat experienced in playing, but definitely not in maintenance like this, though I wish I was.

Thanks for your time!

-colin

It's really tough to diagnose over the internet! But, if I had to venture a guess- I'd go with a high 4th fret or low 3rd fret. Put a short straight edge over the frets close to the A string in that area. The straight edge should be long enough to only cross 3 frets. Slide it across the frets and see if it rocks at any point- that indicates some fret levelling/dressing is required, or possibly just an unseated fret.

So i found 1 unseated fret.It looks like it wasnt put in properly from the factory since its brand new from CORT.The Punisher II is great but lacks alot of quality. The 5th fret looks as though it wasnt pressed correctly & is on a little bit of an angle. In turn its giving me heaps of buzz.
Ive heard people giving a fret a little hit with a hammer to seat it better can i do this ?
