I measure it from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the string. My action is generally around 1/16 of an inch. This is very low, dont feel that yours needs to be this low.

Yes, I slap a lot but i play fingerstyle as well. I dont get bad buzz if I use a light technique and proper touch.

Generally speaking, the more skill one has developed in his/her technique, the more one can play within the narrower range of physical force required at a low action point - and thus take advantage of the greater dynamic range that playing with low action makes possible...

Really it's what works for you. There is no right or wrong as long as it works for you.
I stick real close to what's on Fender's Mr Gearhead page and adjust for feel for that particular bass. I use a spark plug gapper to measure relief between .014 and .018 at the 8th fret with a capo at the first fret and my finger pressing down at the last fret.
Then I measure the string height at the 17th fret (no capo). B string is about 3/32 (or slightly higher) and G string is about 1/16 or (slightly higher). Of course that's top of fret to bottom of string.
It's a good thing to learn how to do this so you can set up all your basses for what works best for you.
If you check it every month or so you will get real familiar with setting up your basses the way you want them.
BTW I'm a fingerstyle player, no slap.
