Action Feeler Gauge?

Sign in to disble this ad
Does somebody make something like a feeler gauge that is well suited to measuring the action on a bass?

I have regular feeler gauges but they really aren't great for measuring the string height. It seems to me somebody should have something better. There's got to be a good, quick, consistent way of (re)setting the action.

You can also go down to your local autoparts store and pickup a spark plug gaper, it is a feeler gauge that looks like a pocket knife with a bunch of different sized metal blades that allow you to specifically set and track your action...its what i use.

Here you go:

I have this and it works perfectly! You need at least 0.4mm on the bass side, and 0.3mm on the treble side. This is subject to personal taste, but I find that works well.

I've never used any formal way of judging string height, always just went by just looking at it. Maybe its time I get some feeler gauges ...

Anyway here's an obvious question that reveals how little I know:
When doing these measurements, you measure from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string right?

correct.
I only use a feeler guage for setting neck relief. Alot of folks just go by feel and do a great job of setting up an instrument. Whatever works for you is best.
I use a steel ruler for setting string height. I measure at the 17th fret and the measurement should be taken from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string.
