action issues and Bass setup in Toronto

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

Anyone from the southern Ontario area know a good place in the Toronto area where I could send my Peavey Milestone 5-string bass for a setup? I'm having action issues with my D and G strings. The bridge seats are nearly at their lowest settings.

I did a neck curvature check (fingers on 1st and 12th frets and check the 7-8 fret string heights) and it looks good. The only other thing I can think of is that the neck seat needs adjustment/shimming.

Thanks in advance,
John

I've always been pleased with The Twelfth Fret on Danforth at Woodbine. Take it in there and the guys will look at it and tell you what needs to be done and roughly how much it will cost.

The truss rod usually ends much further than the 12th fret. To check relief, you should be holding down the first fret and the fret where the neck joins the body, and measure relief at the median between those two frets.

What kind of issues are we talking? It might be something you can easily solve yourself.

For a good setup, I'm a big fan of Doug at Steve's on Queen by Spadina. I don't know if he still works there or not, but I've got his fretwork on all of my instruments and they all play beautifully.

+1 - The 1st, and last fret - then check in the center of those for relief - about a credit card thickness is good. I go just a little less. Then check the action at the 12th or 17th.

I tried it fretting the first and last frets and checking middle of the fretboard and frankly it looks pretty good. The gap between the fretboard and string (both the B and G) is approximately a credit card thickness.

It's got to be the neck seating.

Thanks all, atleast now I now what to ask for.

I can't count the number of times I must have passed that place and not seen it.

I took my P-bass to get set up at Capsule Music, on Queen West near Bellwoods. Everything plays like a dream. Ask to speak with Brad.
