Question Adjust string spacing with a new nut?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I have a nice Stingray but the string spacing on the fretboard is just a tiny bit wide. How much adjustment can be made by cutting a narrower string spacing on a new nut?

Thanks,
P

A man lies in his bed in a room with no door
He waits, hoping for a presence or something, anything to enter
After spending half his life searching
He still felt as blank as the ceiling at which he stared
He is alive, but feels absolutely nothing, so is he?

When he was six, he believed that the moon overhead followed him
By nine, he deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact, no trade-backs
So this is what it's like to be an adult?
If he only knew now what he knew then

I'm open
Come in
I'm open
Come in

Lying sideways atop crumpled sheets and no covers
He decides to dream...Dream up a new self...For himself

How much of an adjustment are you talking about? Like J Bass spacing?

Just stop for a second and think about it logically. You can adjust the spacing at the nut as much as you want but if you can't adjust it at the bridge its just going to fan back out as you get farther down the neck. Try it and see what you like.

I think just a few hairs closer together. Between J and Stingray spacing. For some reason my Bongo is a bit more comfy thought I think the spacing is the same at the nut.

Manipulating the nut is not such a good idea. Probably a royal PIA with only marginal improvement. You'd be better off installing an aftermarket bridge with adjustable spacing (think Hipshot or ABM). Let us know how the project goes!
