| Hi.
There's a few reasons for the new strings not staying in tune and the backlash between the worm and the wheel is not one of them. While the worm can always drive the wheel, the opposite is rare with the single start worm threads used in machine heads.
The usual reason for the strings not stayin in tune is the lack of pre-stretching when installing new strings and the strings slipping in the machine head posts.
The first one is debated to death in another threads, so the strings slipping in the post can be remedied by wrapping the end of the string differently to the post. I like to bend the loose end to the opposite direction while others like to stick the end to the hole. Different strokes for different folks.
You might also want to inspect the "biting edge" of the slot for wear. If it's too rounded, ie. worn, the string will slip if there's not enough windings around the post.
Regards
Sam
