| adjusting the "neck-bolt"?!

as I was a few days ago in a guitar shop, I saw someone from the staff there adjusting a bolt at the top of the neck, as you may guess I'm a newbie, and I was wondering what does that bolt do, and how do I know if I need to adjust it on my guitar??? |
