Adjusting pickup height on an '08 MIA J Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello All,

Can you all chime in on the best/correct method of adjusting the pickup height on a new MIA Jazz bass? Out of the box the bridge pickup is way low (which is where it seems it should be cosidering the "slapability" factor), however the bridge pickup came from the factory installed noticeably higher on the E string side than the G string side. I'm not sure if this is the way it should remain, or if it needs adjustment, or is just a matter of preference.

Any/All comments welcome.

Thanks.

Pick up height has an effect on tone and volume of the strings. If it sounds good to you and the EA strings do not sound noticeably louder than the DA I'd leave it as is, it's not harming anything. On the other hand, if the E is considerably louder than the G, then I'd raise the G a bit. (considering you mentioned that it was set very low)
To raise, just turn the screws counter-clockwise. Start with one side, give it a turn or two, then the other side, adjusting with the same amount of turns. Check volume and repeat if needed.
If you'd rather lower the e side, turn the screws on that end clockwise a turn our two each.
If/when you change the strings, you may need to readjust to compensate.

Start with this link. Read it, and understand it. Then apply it to your new bass.

http://www.fender.com/support/basses.php

Do you have the tools, and the knowledge to do this?

That link is a good start, but your bass can be fine tuned even better than that should you care to do so.

As far as final pickup heights go, that depends on a few different factors. What tone are you looking for? Do you want warm and round, low mids growly tone, top ended grind,..what? You can adjust your pickups to help in the final tone, so as to eq a bit less at the amp.
