Advice on respraying a EDB600 Ergodyne

Hi all, just aquired a 2003 model EDB600 in white pearl finish. It's a great bass and sounds and feels great (yeah it's luthite but I happen to like the weight, sound and feel that this material provides). Now my issue is that the last owner didn't go a good job of looking after it, and well it's a biut beat up in terms of paint marks on various areas (why the heck can't some people look after basses, it's an instrument not a football) and to make matters worse the finish has darkened slightly over the years and the paint now resembles a not so nice sandy baige.

Now my question is, is it possible to sand the paint down to the luthite body (which is actually white when I checked in the control cavity) or possibly even sand down to the primer then paint it in a different finish?.. It's my first time dealing with refinishing basses, and I have done some reading and know luthite can be a bit tricky to deal with but I really am stuck with what to do.. and I don't want to just rush into anything and end up with a "oh crap" situation.

can anyone help with this?

You should be able to sand it smooth without going right down to the luthite. You just want to sand out all the marks and give yourself a flawless surface to put a new finish on. I'd start with 220 paper, going very carefully and when all the marks are out, an even pass with 320. That should give you a good surface for your new finish. Choice of paint is another matter. You may need a coat of a primer, sand smooth and then paint. If you want to use spray cans, Krylon makes a nice, quick drying acrylic that works very well. It comes in various colours including clear and in semi-gloss or gloss.
