| How much bow is there? Going from .03" down to a more desireable .01" is usually no problem and not much turning or danger. Bigger amounts may need professional help if you are unfamiliar.
Try loosening the trussrod a bit (1/4 turn) before tightening, then tightening it the same amount so you get a feel for how much pressure its going to take to tighten it: helps avoid a costly mistake. Learn how you can "bend the neck" straight while you tighten; it reduces the twisting stress on the rod. You brace the neck with your foot and knees, bend the neck back with your hand on the end and then tighten the rod. Read on how a trussrod sits in its groove and this tip will make sense.
If.you go looking on YouTube, avoid the videos done by guys in their living room, etc. Carl Pedigo of Lakland basses has a good vid on setups. Look for pro luthier vids. It's important to learn this so you can adjust when need be, even 5 mins before a show, a little tweak.
