Aftermaket MM Bridge?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am wanting to make my current 'Ray into a stealth by putting all black hardware on it. Has anybody had any experience with an aftermarket MM bridge?

I found this, but I'm always weary about aftermarket stuff:
http://basspartsresource.com/bridge_musicman.htm

Would it be possible to get a black MM bridge from EB? Or are they like Rickenbacker and keep all of their parts top-secret?

$20? For that price, take a chance. If you don't love it, put the original back on - and report your findings!

I agree with Harry, $20 is cheap! Go for it!

Does anyone know if this bridge will fit onto an OLP MusicMan without having to redrill any holes?

It's possible. I know there is one on ebay for $16.99 that specifically says OLP in it.

Will do. I ordered a black jazz control plate once, and after touching it, the black started to wear off, so I'm hoping it's not the same case here.

Bridge...in my shopping cart.

Does anybody know what size the pickguard screws are? Phillips head, #4 x 1/2", by chance?

If the metal is not plated, you can get a flat-black finish by applying Birchwood Casey's instant gun bluing to screws and such. The finish is somewhat uneven and is such that I'd be reluctant to do any large piece like a bridge...but it's handy for screws.

On the other hand, the bottle I have is 30 years old. That wouldn't affect it at ALL, would it?? (Nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Yuck, that thing is a flimsy POS compared to a real MM bridge!

I thought it looked a little weak too, but I haven't studied EBMM basses for long enough to know this difference without an actual MM in front of me.

I wish they would just sell me a darn stealth bridge. I'd even send in my old bridge as proof that I own a Stingray.

I just contacted MM about trading my bridge (and paying an upcharge) for a stealth black bridge. I also questioned them about where they get their hardware colored, so maybe I can send it off to that company and have them simply sand-blast and re-coat my bridge & control plate. I'll let you know what they say.

I'd really hate to risk the integrity of this bass for aesthetic reasons, but I'm not about to buy a new bass and change hardware just to flip it and lose more than what the hardware is worth.

EDIT: I just fired off a similar email to Hipshot about coating/plating some stuff for me.

From EB:

"Thanks for playing Music Man! Unfortunately we do not sell the black hardware and will not be able to help you find a source to make your hardware black. Your best bet is to check around your area for someone that might be able to help you."

Ask on the Lakland thread, I've seen some of the guys have it done to their Lakland bridges, should be able to help.

No luck. Hipshot makes a replacement Lakland bridge.
