Aha!! It is NOT a problem with my action...

I've been frustrated with my Warwick Corvette as I've do more slap and pop. I was sure the action was screwed up because it hurts so darn much to pop the strings. But I have no problem doing slap & pop with my J bass for extended periods and both basses have the same type of strings.

I think the issue I'm having is the larger range of the Warwick (24 frets vs 20 frets for my J bass). So when I pop a string on my Warwick I'm closer to the bridge, which then requires more force to lift the string vs doing pop on the J bass where I'm further from the bridge where the string is loser. According to the standard checks for action the Warwick is set up perfectly with no string buzz and no adjustments needed.

I don't have a very strong right hand (which is why I play right handed bass despite being left handed). So I may need to consider lower tension strings. Right now I use standard gauge (45, 65, 80, 105) Rotosound swing bass strings which sound fantastic on my Warwick. I'd use only the Fender for slap & pop but I love the slap & pop sound of my Warwick!

I find on my 22 fret Ibanez GSR200, I can slap better than on my SR305 5-string, but I always assumed it was because of the extra string and smaller string spacing...could it really have to do with the scale length as well?
