Altoids bridge/gig bag protector hack

Sign in to disble this ad
I wrote a few months back about the bridge height adjustment screws on my J-Bass ripping apart my gig bag. I got a few good suggestions about filing the screws down, etc., and will eventually do something more permanent. But last night I had a crazy idea for a temporary solution. Voila the Altoids can hack:

All you need is tin snips and pliers. Cut the opening about half an inch LESS than the width of your strings. You'll need the extra material to roll the (very sharp) edges over. Don't bother trying to file this very thin metal; just bend it over and flatten it with the pliers; the rolled edges are quite safe.

If you make the opening width just right, the can will hold itself on the strings, at least well enough to protect the gig bag during transport.

Is there ANYTHING that can't be McGuyvered out of an Altoids can? Nice work!

Wow, that's actually pretty sweet looking.
How much for a custom set?

I suppose that'd be a better choice than a sardine can! (& much better smelling, though the grease from a sardine can could be good finger lubricant for the strings...) Good job! I always appreciate inventiveness, creativety & resourcefulness.

I don't think I could go much lower than $1.40, if you throw in the Altoids.

Neat idea. In case you lose your contraption or it should become mangled and scar your instrument, it would be more efficient to duct tape a strip of cardboard to the inside of your gig bag above your bridge; or purchase eight 5/16" #6-32 set screws.

Cheers!

Or slap a strip of gaffer's tape across it - you won't have adhesive clinging to the surface afterwards.
