Am I too picky?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just bought a new Fender FSR, and I LOVE it. However, it has a little bit of buzzing going on in the higher frets, and I can't stand buzzing.

All the frets below the 12th fret are fine, and it's only from about the 11th to the 14th frets on the first 3 strings that buzz, and if I pluck them slightly lighter and hit it the right way with my finger the buzz is totally unnoticeable.

Should I get an adjustment to fix the buzz, or am I just being too picky and should try to not let a few buzzing frets kill me?

Thanks!

Just raise the saddles by turning the screw about 1/8 th turn at a time until the buzz is gone and then retune. If you don't have to move them too much you should not mess up your intonation. If you have a lot of patience turn the screws 1/16 of a turn then you will get it much closer to where it stops and not raise the action as much either.

You are not too picky. Do not adjust to the bass, adjust the bass to you.

Have it looked at by a professional if you are not comfortable adjusting it yourself.

And it may need a fret leveling. Very good money spent on typical over-the-counter basses. If you like the look and feel and sound, a fret leveling could take it over the top.

I'm in the same boat with my new Squier, it has one annoying buzzing fret and it's stopping me getting the action as low as I like it. I will be taking it to a tech at some point to get it looked at and possibly have the frets levelled.

Yeah, that is perfectly normal, and you are not too picky.

I wolud start with straightening the truss rod so the neck is more straight. Buzzes in those frets is typical of having too little tension and bow in the neck.

Then, play with the saddles to lower the action and check for buzzes.

If you don't how how to do all this, it is a good idea to spend $50 in a professional setup, and tell the tech exactly what the problems are. . .

Good luck.

There are a number of different things that can be causing the buzzes in the second octave of the neck. Too many, in fact, to diagnose over the internet without a little more information. Some of the data necessary is amount of relief in the neck at the seventh fret and the string height at the twelfth fret for both the treble and bass sides. When the data is hand the first thing to do is lock in the relief. After that the rest of the adjustments can be made. If you do not know how to measure these things please refer to the sticky at the top of the forum.

Usually, it helps with tightening the trussrod. And then maybe raising the saddles a bit. You'll have to do it a couple of times though, since the neck readjusts itself after time.
