Another Intonation question ..

Sign in to disble this ad
Konichiwa. Im new here on the forums and have been reading through the setup thread about intonation. i recently purchased an OLP MM2 stringray replica off musiciansfriend. Its a great bass and all, but im having trouble with intonation on multiple strings. I recently switched off the stock EB strings to DR hibeams lites. My saddle is all the way towards the bridge and im still sharp on the E and A. I have the saddle nearly all the way back and its not touching the thicker wound. Im using the black Korg turner which has a needle and all, but im still managing to be over 20 cents sharp with the saddle all the way back. Im not sure if the string size or when i adjusted the truss that it could have such a serious impact on the intonation. When i get the chance im going to measure the lengths and compare like i read in another thread on these forums.

Thanks

Assuming you're checking intonation at the 12th fret,,, and you're retuning the string after every adjustment,,,,
I wonder if those sharp strings are still sharp at the 5th fret?
I've seen "knock-offs" before where the fret markers are ill positioned.

Yes, are you retuning the string (open) after each saddle adjustment using the 12th fret (fretted)?
If so, maybe you have a bad set of strings. Please advise as to your method of intonating.

I've found intonation to be sort of a balancing act between saddle height and the amount of relief in the neck. If in tune at the 12th, a straight neck and high saddles results is sharp above the 12th and flat around the 7th. Conversely, lots of relief and low saddles result in flat above the 12th and sharp around the 7th.

Too much relief and high action could be your problem.
