Unhappy Another 'truss rod rattle' question...

Sign in to disble this ad
My new (to me) Benavente SCD 5 Standard has a bit of truss rod buzz/rattle - it only seems noticeable when I hit certain notes (especially harmonics, for some reason).

I've searched the forum and found that the advice most given is to give the truss a slight turn to tighten it (I'm assuming counter-clockwise, right?). Even Brian @ The Low End suggested this. Well, I've done that, but the buzz/rattle is still there.

It can't really be heard when playing through an amp, but most times when I'm practicing/noodling I play the bass acoustically. So I'm constantly hearing it. I really like this bass, but having this problem makes playing it not as enjoyable.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remedy this. Thanks in advance!

Buskman,
Why don't you try to contact Benavente, or a benavente forum

Thanks for the reply, Jason.

The contact info on Chris' site pretty much leads to Brian @ The Low End (their main distributor). Since Brian & Chris work closely together (especially on the Standard model) I assumed talking with him was the next best thing, y'know?

Does anyone have an e-mail address for Chris that they could PM me wth?

Hi.

Truss rod rattles are IMHO the worst. And a sign of bad design/craftmanship.

Luckily there's a cure, sort of, if You're adventorous and the problem is really bad .

On single acting rods, take the truss rod nut off and with a syringe and a needle, fill the truss rod cavity with silicone sealant or something similar. You'll probably have to use at least 4" needle to reach far enough.

On dual acting rods, either take a fret off (8th or so), drill a hole in the middle of the slot and fill the cavity through the hole, or just drill the hole through the FB and fill the hole later. Here You can use ~1mm drill and needle, quite invisible.

Quite extreme, some may think, but it works. And less expensive than taking the FB or skunk-stripe off.

Regards
Sam

Thanks, Sam!

Man, are these my only options? I was hoping for more of a quick (and less involved or costly) fix.

Counter-clockwise would loosen the trussrod nut.

Also, are you positive its the truss rod?

I thought the problem with my buzzing Jazz was the truss rod, but after replacing the nut, this went away.

good luck,

tom
