Anybody else record their setup specs? Looking for comparisons!

Stingray H 3eq

Relief (7th fret)
0.014"
0.355mm

String Height at 21st fret E, G
0.097", 0.082"
2.46mm, 2.08mm

Pickup height from poles E, G
0.120", 0.120"
3.048mm, 3.048mm

Measured everything with feeler gauges. Anybody else record theirs too? I'm curious what others set their basses up at. For my technique that's about the best I can do without some buzz, haha! Seems pretty low to me, but I've played lower.

I don't record my specs but I always go .015" at the seventh fret.

I imagine we've got pretty close to the same thing round the board then.

Your measurements should also include

nut height
bridge height
neck tilt
strings

With 4-5 hours I can get most quality basses to play 1-1.25 mm action.

Unfortunately I'm a noob when it comes to doing my own work and I don't know how to take those measurements. I'm guessing nut height could be measured by sliding the feelers under the string right up against the nut? Bridge height measured the same way. NO clue how to measure tilt. What do you mean by "strings?"

More than willing to learn!

Also MNairhead, I'd be curious to see a spread of measurements you took on one of the basses you setup. I'm trying to get better at this and maybe seeing the measurements of someone who is better at this than I am could point me in the right direction.

The only part of my setup routine that I perform just by feel (no exact measurements) is neck relief adjustment using the method recommended by Gary Willis. As for the rest...

- String height from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the string:

G: 1/16" (1.58 mm)
D: 5/64" (1.98 mm)
A: 3/32" (2.38 mm)
E: 7/64" (2.78 mm)
B: 1/8" (3.18 mm)

- Pickup height from the top of the polepieces to the bottom of the strings:

Neck pickup bass side (5-string bass): 3/16" (4.76 mm)
Neck pickup bass side (4-string bass): 11/64" (4.36 mm)
Neck pickup treble side (4- and 5-string bass -I don't play sixers): 1/8" (3.18 mm)
Bridge pickup bass side (5-string bass): 5/32" (3.96 mm)
Bridge pickup bass side (4-string bass): 9/64" (3.56 mm)
Bridge pickup treble side: 3/32" (2.38 mm)

Interesting stuff! With the relief set as is I can't go any lower on string height without having to significantly change my technique to get rid of buzz. I don't play overly hard, though I used to when I first started (ha... self taught). When I do go lower I get buzz on every fret.

So I think my only variables I can alter to get lower is technique and string gauge/wraps (tension and vibration arc: Increase gauge --> Increase tension --> decrease arc --> possible lower action attainable). Any verification on this from anyone?

I vaguely remember reading someone on here (NO idea if it's true, I don't wanna look for myself) saying that all 'Rays come factory with a neck shim. So that's another variable but I don't wanna take my neck off.

I'm gonna take the rest of my measurements once I get my Physics 2 (circuits..) HW and workout done.

Oh and that Gary Willis site was the one I used in conjunction with TB to learn how to do these setups to begin with, haha. But I use a capo up at the 1st fret so I can get my measurements easier.
