Anybody know where to order a Straightedge?

For relatively cheap? Say around $10 maybe? Just thought I'd ask before I go shopping for one.

And I'm talking about something long enough for the entire fretboard.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Maybe check at Lowes' or Home Depot. Precision straight edges are a bit on the pricey side.

A framing square may do it if they don't have an official 'straightedge'. Or maybe a drywall square, depending on cost.

If nothing else they'll have flat metal stock in iron and aluminum, different thicknesses and lengths to choose from. Just a few bucks. Check it with a real straightedge, or put it up against one of their best 4' levels.

You could also try Sears.

Flat stock metal, usually found in hardware and hobby stores, is not straight... I know from experience. It must be made specifically for the purpose.

Ten bucks? Not gonna happen.

A string is an excellent straightedge

If you absolutely require the extreme accuracy of the precision straightedge you'll have to pay the price. I paid $45 for mine a number of years ago. Got it from an artists supply store. Mine was longer than I needed so I cut off about 6" and can use that for other things.

If you don't need that much accuracy a good quality framing square or a carpenters level might do the trick.

I read an article by Michael Tobias once where he recommended using a carpenters level with sandpaper for fret leveling. I think he's pretty picky about it being accurate enough.

These days it's harder to find a good quality carpenter's level but there are a few good ones left that are made in North America. But you won't find them for anywhere near $10.

These are as good as they get and not a bad deal. I find it hard to walk out of a Lee Valley store without spending a couple hundred bucks.

+1 on the Lee Valley straight edges. They'll definitely cost you more than $10, but they are worth every cent!

Also, if they ever loose accuracy over time, Lee Valley will replace them for free.

Spend more than $10 on your straight edge if you're using it to level wood for glue joints or leveling a fretboard or frets...you'll want one that's accurate to about .0015".
